ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Tanner Cooper (Finger Lakes CC) allowed just one run over six complete innings, and the Monarchs defeated the Flyin’ Fish, 7-1 to clinch a spot in the 2018 Interstate Collegiate Baseball League Championship Series.
Cooper, who struck out a league-high 61 batters in 39 innings of work during the regular season, fanned eight and allowed one run on one hit. The right-hander retired 10 of the last 11 batters who came to the plate and faced three over the minimum for the outing. He threw 76 pitches (49 for strikes).
The Monarchs sent 10 to the plate in a four-run fourth to break open a 1-1 game. Cooper delivered an RBI single in the inning. Mike Magnanti (St. Bonaventure University), Ryan Kalbfus (Gannon University), Stephen Kemp (Medaille College) and Brandon Henshaw (St. Bonaventure University) scored a run apiece in the decisive frame.
Cooper finished 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI. Kemp scored two runs and drove in another two. Cole Penders (Brockport College) had two RBI and a run scored. Jackson Smith (Ithaca College) singled and scored a run.
Michael Ciccarone (Niagara County Community College) worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Monarchs.
Kole Brink (SUNY Fredonia) walked and scored the lone Flyin’ Fish run in the first inning. Dan Bamann (Keuka College) collected the only hit for the Fish – a leadoff single in the second.
The Monarchs will meet the Lake Monsters in the best-of-three ICBL Championship Series. A 5:30 PM first pitch at the University of Rochester is scheduled Wednesday night for game one.
