MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former FGCU men’s basketball standout Brandon Goodwin has become the first player in program history to earn an NBA Summer League roster spot as the Memphis Grizzlies announced the guard as one of their 17 mini-camp members.
The mini camp will include five sessions over three days, beginning today (Thursday) and concluding Saturday. Following mini camp, the team will compete in the Utah Jazz Summer League from July 2-5. The team will play three games against the Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs and host Jazz.
Following completion of those contests, the team will travel to Las Vegas for MGM Resorts NBA Summer League, a 12-day competition featuring all 30 teams that will tip off July 6 and continue through July 17 at the Thomas & Mack Center and COX Pavilion. Teams will play three preliminary games between July 6-10 before being seeded in a tournament that starts on July 11 and concludes with the championship game on July 17. Each team will play a minimum of five games in Vegas.
Goodwin concluded his career with FGCU this past spring by being named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press, joining Sherwood Brown in 2013 as the only FGCU men’s basketball players to garner the award.
“I’m excited for Brandon to get the opportunity to compete on the biggest stage this summer with an organization that is led by a former co-worker and friend in JB Bickerstaff,” said FGCU head coach Michael Fly. “Brandon has earned this with his hard work and proven resume as a winner. It is a great honor for him and our program, and we will be rooting him on and supporting him throughout his professional journey.”
A UCF transfer, Goodwin – who will wear jersey number 16 on the summer league team – dominated the ASUN Conference and led the Eagles since becoming eligible for his junior season in 2016-17. He was named the unanimous 2017 ASUN Newcomer of the Year, and followed it up by becoming just the second FGCU product to be named ASUN Player of the Year in 2018, once again joining Brown in 2013. Additionally, The Norcross High School product became the first player in program history to be lauded as a two-time NABC District 3 First Team selection.
The 6-2 Goodwin led FGCU in points (18.6), rebounds (5.5) and assists (4.8) – one of only eight players nationally who paced his team in all three categories this past year. He ranked 2nd in the ASUN in scoring, 3rd in assists, 9th in steals (1.4) and 12th in rebounding – the only player in the league to rank in the top 12 in all four categories.
With 632 points in 34 games, the Norcross, Ga., native surpassed his own single-season program record of 629 points established last year in the same amount of contests. He also broke his own single-season D-I program record for free throws made (144; previous: 136 last year).
In league games, the two-time ASUN Player of the Week in 2017-18 ranked 4th in scoring (19.6), 4th in steals (1.7), 5th in assists (4.6) and 8th in rebounding (6.1) – once again the only player to rank in the top 10 in all four categories. Goodwin, who had four double-doubles on the year, also ranked 8th in ASUN games in field-goal percentage (.538), and finished the regular season by posting scoring performances of 28, 28 and 27 points. He delivered a then Division-I program record 34-point performance in the ASUN Tournament Final.
Despite playing just two years with FGCU, Goodwin’s name is plastered all over the program’s all-time record book, including: points (7th, 1,261), assists (5th, 301), field goals made (8th, 442), field-goal percentage (7th, .490) and free throws made (3rd, 280).
