Palmyra-Macedon graduate Cody Eckerson signed a free agent deal with the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.

During his senior season this past spring with the Niagara University Purple Eagles, Eckerson struck out a team-high 87 batters in 74.1 innings of work. The left-hander set the Niagara program career mark with 264 strikeouts.

While at Niagara, Eckerson established program records for games started (47), shutouts (five) and innings pitched (258.1). He is second in Purple Eagle history with 19 career wins and and holds the fourth best career ERA (3.87). In 2017, he won six games and logged an ERA of 3.87.

Eckerson led Pal-Mac to the 2013 Section V Class BB title. He struck out 15 and hurled a 3-hitter when Pal-Mac defeated Batavia 7-3 in the championship game. Eckerson also connected on a solo shot in that contest.

Fellow Niagara Purple Eagle and Section V alum Greg Cullen was taken in last week’s MLB draft. The Atlanta Braves chose Cullen, a McQuaid graduate, in the 15th round.
