ROCHESTER, NY – Rochester Red Wings left-handed pitcher Stephen Gonsalves has been named the International League Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Gonsalves was spectacular while earning two wins, surrendering one run on a solo homer, four total hits and two walks with 14 strikeouts over 14.1 innings. He held opponents to a .087 batting average and pitched to a 0.63 ERA.
In his first Triple-A start of the season on May 1 at Pawtucket, Gonsalves yielded just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts in 7.2 innings. He faced the minimum through seven innings and retired 16 in a row before a leadoff walk in the 8th. The PawSox recorded their lone hit against him in the second inning but that was erased on a double play.
The left-hander followed that up by throwing 4.2 perfect innings to begin his start on May 6 vs. Lehigh Valley before Mitch Walding hit a solo home run in the 5th. Gonsalves finished the game by surrendering one run on three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Gonsalves is the first Rochester pitcher to be named International League Pitcher of the Week since Aaron Slegers on July 24, 2017. The Wings had four IL Pitchers of the Week last season: Jose Berríos (2x), Nik Turley and Slegers.
