CANANDAIGUA – The MCC baseball team ran its winning streak to nine games with a pair of victories over Finger Lakes Community College Tuesday afternoon.
The Tribunes prevailed 9-5 and 6-5 to move to 21-18 on the season. The two teams will do battle once again on Thursday, this time at Monroe.
MCC jumped out to a quick lead in the opener, as Phil Ferranti drilled a two-run double and later came around on a base hit by Sam Loew for a 3-0 lead.
The Lakers got one back in the bottom half of the first and tacked on another in the fourth to cut it to 3-2. It stayed that way until the sixth, when Monroe put up a four-spot.
Loew doubled in a run to make it 4-2 before Logan Martella-Tasick singled in Ferranti to push the lead to three. TJ Lucey followed with a sacrifice fly, and Anthony Maycapped the inning with a run-scoring two-bagger.
MCC then added two more in the seventh on a Loew sac fly and a wild pitch.
Eric O’Brien won his second straight start, scattering nine hits and striking out three over the complete-game effort. Ferranti, Loew, Martella-Tasick, and Matt Wagner all had two hits.
Brennen Smith came through with the clutch hit in game two, breaking a 3-3 tie with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth. That helped Monroe rally from an early two-run deficit.
Smith finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, and Ferranti and Andrew Czubaj also added two hits. Lucey drove in a pair of runs.
Frankie Pizzo picked up the win on the hill, tossing five innings while striking out five.
