Aaron Slegers and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Rochester Red Wings beat the Syracuse Chiefs 2-0 Saturday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium.
Slegers (2-0) surrendered four hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings. He has pitched to a 1.50 ERA (4 ER, 24 IP) in four starts to begin the season.
Nick Anderson issued one walk while striking out four in 2.0 hitless innings in relief of Slegers while Gabriel Moya secured his first Triple-A save with a scoreless 9th inning.
The Red Wings (8-10) had just six hits of their own and three of those came to begin the 2nd inning against Cesar Vargas (0-2). James Ramsey drove in a run with the last of those giving Rochester a 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs (12-8) had their biggest threats against Slegers in the 4th and 6th. Syracuse put runners at first and second with one out in the 4th and first and second with two outs in the 6th but Slegers was able to pitch out of both jams.
Anderson faced first and second with two outs in the 8th but he made a nice play on a comebacker off the bat of former Wing Matt Hague to end the inning.
Syracuse once again put the tying runs on base with one out in the 9th against Moya but a pop out and a strikeout ended the game.
