Chad Gartland started the week tossing a 2-hitter. Chris Butler finished with a 3-hitter, and the Irondequoit Eagles notched a trio of victories outscoring opponents 10-1 to grab Team of the Week for April 9-15th. Gartland, who suffered an ankle injury in last year’s opener and missed the remainder of his sophomore season, fanned 11 in Irondequoit’s 3-1 win over Greece Arcadia, a Class A1 finalist a year ago. Butler set down 10 on strikes in a 2-0 over 2017 Class AA finalist Rush-Henrietta. In between, Nick Serce started and hurled 5.1 of scoreless ball in a 5-0 win over Arcadia. The junior struck out 12 before giving way to Alex Nells who made his first varsity appearance on the hill. Tim Mabb’s staff lowered its ERA to 1.50 with the three-game effort. With the two wins over Arcadia, Irondequoit (3-1/2-0) moved into an early tie atop the Monroe County Division II standings with Webster Schroeder. The Eagles won just seven games a year ago.
WE DIDN’T FORGET ABOUT….
Speaking of Webster Schroeder, the Warriors needed extra innings in their season opener and then closed the week cooling off one of the hotter teams in Section V. Tommy Baxter delivered a walk-off single in Schroeder’s 4-3 win over Spencerport to start the week. Matt Knight’s squad followed with a 12-5 triumph over the Rangers the following day. The Warriors (3-0) snapped Penfield’s three-game winning streak with a 6-1 win. Junior right-hander Peter Smith allowed one run on two hits over six-and-a-third in the win over Penfield.
The longest winning streak in the Monroe County belongs to the Brockport Blue Devils who took two from league rival and reigning Class A1 champion, Canandaigua on their way to a 3-0 week. Frank Lauricella started and allowed one run on one hit over four innings in Brockport’s 4-3 win over Canandaigua to start the week – a game in which Brockport (4-3) trailed 3-2 going into the ninth. Cole Penders finished 2-for-3 in the game including a single in the two-run Blue Devils seventh. In Brockport’s 9-5 win over Canandaigua, Lauricella went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Lauricella started and surrendered one unearned run on two hits over five full in Brockport’s 6-4 win over Hilton to close the week. Penders finished the week 5-for-9 with three runs scored and an RBI. Brockport has won four straight.

McQuaid Jesuit Knights – improved to 7-1 on the season with two more wins. The reigning Section Class AA champs and NYS semifinalists beat Aquinas (17-3) and Corning-Painted Post (IV/9-4). Noah Campanelli went a combined 5-for-6 with a walk, two doubles, six runs scored and an RBI. Ben Beauchamp connected for a grand slam in the victory over Aquinas. Senior Erik Johnson notched his third win of the season in the triumph over Corning-Painted Post.
The Gananda Panthers outscored opponents 23-3 in three wins last week. Tim McClare struck out eight and surrendered one hit over six innings of work in the Panthers 2-0 win over East Rochester. The Canisius College commit also connected on a two-run home run to supply the game’s only runs. Cody Hill drove in seven and Zach Ciprich fanned 10 over five scoreless in Gananda’s 11-0 win over Lyons. Hill drove in three, and Jayden Castrechini scored four in Gananda’s 10-3 win over Mynderse to close the week.
Kyle Crandall’s East High Eagles opened the season with three wins by a combined score of 27-1.
