PENFIELD 4 POWDERSVILLE (SC) 1 eight innings
Andrew Ebersol started and allowed one run on five hits over 6.1 innings. The senior struck out 11 and escaped a pair of jams with timely punch outs. In the second inning with a runner on second (via an error) and nobody out, Ebersol fanned the side to end the threat without allowing a run. In the fifth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out he struck out the next two hitters and then got a fly out to center.
In the bottom of the seventh with the score tied 1-1, Powdersville had a runner on second with one out and their No. 3 hitter at the plate who connected on would-be game-winning shot down the third base line. Gage Ziehl made a fantastic backhand catch, going down to his knees and then alertly doubled up the runner at second to end the inning. Gage then led off the top of the eighth with a home run over the left field fence for a 2-1 Penfield lead. The Patriots stretched the lead on an RBI single by Connor Stuewe and an RBI double by Patrick Bowes who finished the game 3-for-4 with three doubles. Bowes scored Penfield’s first run in the fifth inning on an AJ Kimmins RBI fielder’s choice. Bowes led the frame with a two bagger and moved to third when Tim Nichols battled back after falling behind 0-2 in the count and delivered with a fly ball to deep center field. Penfield improved to 3-1 with the win.
