Section V Roundup: Johnson goes distance for McQuaid; Penfield’s Ziehl shines in debut

PENFIELD 10 WEST SENECA EAST (VI) 3
Freshman Gage Ziehl hurled four-plus innings in his first varsity start and sparked an eight-run sixth as Penfield won its opener. Ziehl struck out five and walked one over 4.2 innings while allowing three runs (0 earned). He induced eight groundball outs in the effort.  Ziehl was the first of five straight Patriots to reach base when he led the sixth with a double. Penfield sent 14 to the plate in the frame to turn a one-run deficit into an insurmountable advantage. AJ Kimmins gave Penfield the lead with a three-run two-bagger, and Andrew Ebersol capped the inning with a bases-clearing triple. Ben Harrison picked up the win in relief tossing a scoreless inning and a third. The junior fanned two, walked none and surrendered one hit. Vinny Micalizzi worked a scoreless seventh. Ziehl finished 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Ebersol walked twice and crossed home once. Harrison, Brendan Miller, Ben Kearns, Patrick Bowes and Connor Stuewe also scored a run. The game was played in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

McQUAID JESUIT 4 MARION COUNTY (OH) 1
Erik Johnson became the second McQuaid starter in as many days to go the distance as the senior left-hander allowed one run on six hits in his second outing of the season. Johnson struck out 10 and walked none throwing 84 pitches – 69 for strikes. Ryan O’Mara, Monday’s winning pitcher, finished 2-for-3 with a solo home run in a three-run first as McQuaid improved to 4-0 on the season. Ben Beauchamp walked and scored on an error in the first. AJ Fina singled and came around with McQuaid’s second run on another Marion County miscue. Drew Bailey singled and scored in the second. O’Mara needed just 74 pitches in a complete -game effort Monday when McQuaid downed Johnson Central, 4-0. Johnson improved to 2-0. He hurled 4.0 innings in McQuaid’s opener a 9-5 win over Westerville South (OH). Tuesday’s game was played at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida.

St. JAMES (SC) 5 BROCKPORT 2
Joshua Keenan finished 2-for-4 with a run scored in Brockport’s opener. Cole Penders singled and scored. Quinlan Ignaszak set down seven on strikes without a walk over four innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. Troy Leibert surrendered two runs (one earned) on three over two innings. The game was played in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

MANALAPAN (NJ) 14 FAIRPORT 0
Parker Houde finished 2-for-3 in the loss. Josh VanBramer and Andrew Wallman both went 1-for-2. Fairport fell to 1-1 with the loss. The game was played at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

FORDHAM PREP (BRONX) 8 PITTSFORD SUTHERLAND 0
Keegan Cummings, Michael Daniele, Jackson Renica and Graham Schild had a hit apiece in a losing effort. Sutherland fell to 2-2. The game was played at Coastal Carolina University.
