HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The College at Brockport came out on top against Houghton College, winning 9-4. Two RBI days by Charlie Serino and Justin LaRosa brought the offense to life late in the game to help triumph over the opposition. Following the non-conference victory, the Golden Eagles move to 7-9 on season, while the Highlanders drop to 8-7 on the year.
Starting pitcher, Trevor McCarthy, struggled with his command, but between him and Casey Piazza, Brockport was able to get out of the inning allowing only one run to cross the plate. The Green and Gold got on the board in the fourth inning after Liam O’Leary got things started with a single. Nik Malachowski singled a couple of batters later and with the help of an error by the opposition, Austin Hall and O’Leary were able to cross the plate and grab a 2-1 lead.
Another pair of missteps by the Highlanders helped Brockport add to the lead in the fifth inning after Tom Kretzler walked and stole second, two wild-pitches later he was coming home and making the score 3-1. Houghton added a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth, but the Golden Eagles quickly responded in the top of the sixth to tie the game, 4-4. The Green and Gold claimed the lead once again one inning later and showing off their speed in the process. Larosa hit a triple to left center and then after a Jack Wallworkwalk, he stole second before a Serino hit a three-bagger of his own to drive in the two baserunners. Larosa and Wallwork combined to drive in three more runs that extended the lead to 9-4, the eventual end result.
Chris Cramer, Dave Sicina and Sean Connors combined to pitch a nearly perfect 4.0 innings to allow Brockport to take hold of the game. The trio allowed one hit, gave up one walk and struck out six batters.
