FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason’s Zach Mort tossed a complete game shutout, holding the St. Bonaventure bats at bay as the Bonnies dropped their Atlantic 10 baseball opener, 4-0, at Spuhler Field Saturday afternoon.
Mort was the story as he scattered five hits and struck out 13 while walking none to improve to 3-1 on the season.
George Mason (8-11, 1-0 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the third inning, then added two runs in the fourth for a three-run advantage.
That would be more than enough for Mort who faced a bit of a challenge in the first when Sam Fuller singled and stole second to begin the game. That would be as close as the Bonnies could get to cracking into the scoring column, however, as the Brown and White did not send a runner past second base on the afternoon.
Ryan MacCarrick had two hits while Fuller, Mike Magnanti and Jeff Palczewski had one apiece.
Brandon Schlimm started and worked 5.2 innings, allowing three runs while striking out six and walking one. He tossed 64 of his 94 pitches for strikes. James Wetter threw 2.1 innings of one-run relief out of the Bonnies bullpen.
Bona (4-11, 0-1) is back in action with a doubleheader at George Mason beginning Sundayat noon as the teams complete their Atlantic 10-opening series after snow earlier in the week forced game delays due to field conditions.
