Lady Tribunes claim Region III title

ROCHESTER – Tournament MVP Sierra Green hit seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points to lead the MCC women’s basketball team to an 89-54 win over Niagara County Community College in the Region III, Division II championship game Sunday afternoon.

The Tribunes (29-2) now advance to the NJCAA Division II national tournament, which will take place March 20-24 at North Arkansas College in Harrison, Ark.

Green hit six of her 3’s in the first half as Monroe opened a 49-23 lead at the break. MCC led by 17 before Green connected on three straight from beyond the arc. That was followed by a pair of free throws from Taliyah Brisco and a 3 at the buzzer by Samirah Henderson to make it a 26-point advantage heading to the locker room.

MCC held a 28-18 edge in rebounding in the first half and had 12 assists on 16 made baskets.

The Tribunes return to the national tournament after finishing third last season. Seeding and matchups will be announced in the coming days.

Lanay Rodney and Erica Abitante added 14 points apiece and joined Green on the All-Tournament Team. Torrie Cash also made it after totaling eight points, six rebounds, and four assists. Henderson and Shailx Hines scored nine apiece, Brisco had seven, and Jaynelle Robinson had seven points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks.

MCC made 17 3-pointers on the game, while holding the Thunderwolves to 1-for-12 in that same category.
