PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team dropped the first of a three-game series with Western Michigan Friday afternoon, 9-2, in the Snowbird Classic.
Western Michigan improves to 3-4 on the season while the Bonnies now stand at 2-4.
The Broncos got a run in the second inning, then picked up two more runs on a double from Jesse Forestell in the third for a 3-0 lead.
The WMU advantage extended to 5-0 through six frames before the Bonnies attempted a rally.
In the eighth, the Bonnies finally cracked into the scoring column with a pair of runs. Brandon Henshaw walked with one away, then came in to score when Ryan MacCarrick smoked a double to left. Later in the inning with MacCarrick standing at third, the Bonnies senior scored following a foul out off the bat of Tyler Kelder to get within 5-2.
Western Michigan added four runs of insurance in the home half of the inning, however, to put the game away.
Bona collected nine hits on the day, but could not pick up the timely hitting needed for a rally and left eight men on base.
Senior Nate Grant started and worked five innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
MacCarrick, Casey Vincent and Jake Foden all had two hits apiece for the Bonnies.
The two teams are back in action Saturday at 11 a.m.
