ROCHESTER, NY – Junior forward Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73’s) of the RIT men’s hockey team was named the NCAA Ice Hockey First Star of the Week in addition to earning Atlantic Hockey Offensive Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, for the week ending Feb. 18, 2018. It is Brown’s first weekly honor of the 2017-18 season and second AHA accolade of his collegiate career.
Brown enjoyed a week to remember, scoring eight goals, while adding an assist in leading RIT to a 2-1 mark. Monday, Brown recorded his first collegiate hat-trick, scoring a goal in each of the first three periods in a 6-5 overtime win over Mercyhurst. On Saturday, Brown tied Brad McGowan’s Division I team record by scoring four goals, including a natural hat-trick in the first 21 minutes as RIT cruised to a 5-0 win over Sacred Heart. Sunday, Brown scored a goal and added an assist in a 5-3 loss to the Pioneers. It is a Division I team record for most goals over a three-game stretch.
The junior forward now has 12 points in his last five games (8-4-12) and has jumped to second in all of Division I with 25 goals (two shy of RIT’s Division I team record). He leads the Tigers in scoring with 36 points (25-11-36) in 32 games and is now just two goals shy of 50 for his collegiate career.
Brown and the Tigers wrap up the regular season at home this weekend with a pair of games against Atlantic Hockey leader Mercyhurst University. The Tigers enter the weekend tied for fourth in the league standings with 27 points. The top five teams in the league standings earn a first-round bye and advance to the quarterfinals.
