BRONX, N.Y. – James Demery scored a game-high 20 points and Shavar Newkirk scored 19 as Saint Joseph’s (11-14; 6-7 A-10) defeated Fordham, 71-55, to pick up its first Atlantic 10 road win of the year at Rose Hill Gym.
Demery connected on 8-of-14 from the field while Newkirk handed out seven assists as the Hawks won their second in a row. Chris Clover and Pierfrancesco Oliva each scored 10 points off the bench.
Saint Joseph’s led from the start it built its lead up to double digits with five minutes to go in the first half, and maintained that for the rest of the contest.
Leading 42-23 at the start of the second half, Fordham (9-16; 4-9) went on an 11-2 run to trim its deficit to 44-34, but that would be the closest as the Rams would come the rest of the way.
With Saint Joseph’s up, 50-39, the Hawks used a 12-4 spurt, with four straight from Demery, to match their biggest lead of the game, 62-43, with 7:29 to play.
Thomas Sanchez scored five straight to pull Fordham within 66-53 at 2:39, but Newkirk hit one of his three three-pointers to seal the win.
The Hawks led from the opening tip and took a quick 15-9 lead. After Fordham cut it to 15-13, SJU went on a 7-0 run, with five from Newkirk, to take its first double-digit lead, 26-15. Saint Joseph’s, which shot 57 percent in the half, scored 11 of the final 13 points, including a three from Funk with 13 seconds to go, to take a 37-19 lead at halftime.
Fordham was led by Cavit Hasva with 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting.
The win snapped an eight-game road losing streak for SJU, which included a non-league game at Penn.
