TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Chuck Champion and Isaiah Hart each scored 15 points for Loyola University Maryland on Wednesday night, but Florida State Unviersity knocked down 11 3-pointers to the Greyhounds’ three, and the Seminoles secured a 96-71 non-conference victory at the Donald Tucker Civic Center.
The Seminoles (8-0 overall), fresh off a win over fifth-ranked University of Florida earlier in the week, built an 11-point lead less than five mintues in, but layups by Brent Holcombe and Hart cut the Loyola deficit to seven, 17-10, with 14:13 left in the first half. M.J. Walker, however, made one of his four 3-pointers at 13:35 for the Seminoles, starting a 12-2 run.
Florida State’s advantage in the first half ballooned to 20 twice in the first half, but Loyola got within 15, 46-31, on an Ian Langendoerfer jumper with less than 30 ticks to go before halftime.
Langendoerfer scored a career-high 10 points and also had five rebounds.
Braian Angola scored five of the second half’s first eight points, and his dunk at 18:39 made it 53-32 Florida State. The Greyhounds, however, reeled off nine-straight points on layups by Hart and Champion and a three and a two from Langendoerfer.
Langendoerfer’s basket 3:57 into the half got the Greyhounds within a dozen, 53-41, but they would not be able to pull closer for the remainder of the game.
Angola led all scorers with 18 points, while C.J. Walker and M.J. Walker had 15 and 15, respectively.
Cam Gregory added nine points and a game-high eight rebounds for Loyola, while Andre Walker and Luke Johnson added eight points each. River Reed made his collegiate debut and scored four points to go with five rebounds.
During the game, Gregory moved into ninth-place all-time at Loyola in rebounds. He now has 694 and passed Bernard Allen (2001-05).
The Greyhounds (1-7) return to Reitz Arena on Saturday, December 9, for a 4 p.m. tilt against Binghamton University. Saturday is Alumni Day at Loyola with the women’s basketball team hosting the first game of a doubleheader at 1 p.m. against Towson University.
