BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — Tennessee State men’s basketball redshirt junior forward Christian Mekowulu earned adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.
Mekowulu posted back-to-back double-doubles in TSU’s two games during the week. The 6-9 forward from Lagos, Nigeria averaged 21.0 points, 16.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game versus Fisk and Lipscomb.
He started the week with 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds – seven on the offensive glass – against Fisk on Nov. 28. In TSU’s overtime game versus Lipscomb on Dec. 2, Mekowulu tallied a career-best 26 points and 15 rebounds to go with three blocks. For the week, Mekowulu shot 15-of-22 (.682) from the floor in the two games.
Mekowulu is the first Tiger to earn an OVC weekly award this season. For Mekowulu, it is his third career OVC award and first since taking OVC Freshman of the Week on Jan. 5, 2015.
