SYRACUSE, NY – The RIT women’s hockey team (4-8-1, 1-4-0 CHA) fell for the second straight day to College Hockey America foe Syracuse University (3-7-2, 2-0-1 CHA), 5-1 Saturday afternoon from Tennity Ice Pavillion.
Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline) scored the lone goal for RIT, while Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) took the loss in net for RIT with 25 saves.
Abbey Miller received the win for Syracuse with 15 saves. Brooke Avery scored twice for the Orange and three others notched one. Lindsay Eastwood and Kelli Rowswell finished with two assists to go with each of their goals.
Shots were 30-16 in favor of Syracuse. The Orange were 1-5 on power plays compared to RIT’s 0-for-4 day.
“I thought we were doing a lot of good things,” said Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach Scott McDonald. “We just lacked with finishing touches around their net shooting it right at the goalie or missing the net completely. On the other side of the puck, Syracuse did a great job capitalizing on our mistakes and we paid the price for it.”
With just under ten minutes into the first period, Baker took off on a breakaway into the Syracuse zone until a penalty was called on the Orange, resulting in a penalty shot. Baker took the shot for RIT, firing it on target but Miller made the big save for Syracuse, keeping it scoreless.
Avery would find the back of the net off an assist from Eastwood and Alli Munroe with just over five minutes to go in the first to make it 1-0 for the Orange.
Tori Haywood (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary’s Catholic) had one of the best chances of the second period when she sped down the ice into the Orange zone and riffled a shot on net that was grabbed by Miller.
Avery found the back of the net for the second time just beyond the halfway mark of the second period off assists from Munroe and Rowswell making the game 2-0, Syracuse.
Eastwood scored for Syracuse on power play off an assist from Avery just under six minutes into the third to make it 3-0. Rowswell scored just 24 seconds later off an assist from Logan Hicks to make it a 4-0 game.
Baker scored her first goal of the season unassisted, making it a 4-1 game with 13:25 left in regulation.
Syracuse leads the all-time series between the two schools 16-7-2
