Canisius head men’s basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon announced Wednesday that Mervin James (Mableton, Ga.) has signed his National Letter of Intent and will join the Golden Griffin men’s basketball program for the 2018-19 season.
James is the first player to sign an NLI to join Canisius during the NCAA’s early signing period since Witherspoon took over the program in May 2016.

• Currently in his senior year at Pebblebrook High School in Georgia. Pebblebrook is a Class 6A school in Georgia (largest high school classification).
• Averaged 6.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in his junior season.
• Nicknamed “Dog” by Pebblebrook head coach George Washington because “he’s going to talk and do the dirty work”.
• Plays for Nike South Beach EYBL in the summer circuit.
Witherspoon on James: “Mervin is someone that we believe will have a very bright future with our program. He’s young for his class year, he just turned 17, and we have seen a tremendous amount of growth from him through the recruiting process. He is very excited to join our program, and we are just as excited that he has chosen to join our family.”
