J.T. Barrett named one of five candidates for Johnny Unitas Award

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The field of 10 finalists for the 2017 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award has been trimmed and already graduated Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett is one of the five candidates for the award, presented annually by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc.

Candidates must be college seniors or fourth-year juniors on schedule to graduate with their class. In addition to on-field accomplishments, candidates are judged on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement and leadership. 

Barrett is leading one of the nation’s most prolific offenses. The Buckeyes are third nationally in total offense at 546.5 yards per game, fifth in scoring at 44.2 points per game and 17th nationally in both passing and rushing at 301.2 and 245.3 yards per game, respectively. 

The first three-time captain in program history, covering 128 years, Barrett is leading the nation in points responsible for (224) and points responsible for average (22.4), plus he is fourth in touchdown passes (30), fifth in completion percentage (67.4) and sixth in passing efficiency (167.04). 

A holder of 34 Ohio State (29) and Big Ten (five) records, Barrett is Ohio State’s second leading rusher on the season with 572 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns. He has the 8-2 Buckeyes ranked No. 8 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches’ Polls heading in to a Big Ten Conference contest with Illinois Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ABC will televise. 

The Golden Arm Award will be presented at a ceremony on Friday, Dec. 8, at the Embassy Suites Baltimore Inner Harbor & The Grand, in Baltimore, Md.
