ROCHESTER – The MCC women’s basketball team overcame a poor shooting performance to defeat Monroe College 76-68 in the title game of the fifth annual Murph Shapiro Basketball tournament Sunday afternoon.
Despite an iron that was often unkind, the Tribunes (6-1) did come through with some timely shooting down the stretch. Monroe led by six with just over two minutes remaining before Torrie Cash and Sierra Green hit back-to-back 3’s to restore a double-digit lead.
The Mustangs then scored the next eight to cut the lead to four. But with 32 seconds left, Monroe College was whistled for intentional and technical fouls. Shalix Hinesstepped to the line and calmly knocked down all four free throws to ice the game.
Green and Taliyah Brisco finished with 16 points apiece to lead the Tribunes. Hines finished with 13 points and 10 assists, while Lanay Rodney added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Cash also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
