CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Bucknell senior forward Zach Thomas posted a pair of double-doubles to open the season, collecting the first Patriot League Men’s Basketball The Rock Player of the Week honor of the 2017-18 season. Holy Cross freshman guard Caleb Green earned The Rock Rookie of the Week after a strong collegiate debut when weekly awards were announced by the League office on Monday afternoon.
Thomas averaged 27.5 points and 13.0 rebounds in Bucknell’s losses to Monmouth and Arkansas, while Green scored 12 points to help the Crusaders to a victory over Sacred Heart.
Lehigh junior guard Lance Tejada scored a game-high 24 points to help the Mountain Hawks to an 84-76 defeat of Marist in overtime to earn weekly honorable mention. Holy Cross junior forward Karl Charles scored 23 points to lead the Crusaders’ to a 69-64 victory over Sacred Heart on Friday night, while Loyola Maryland senior forward Cam Gregory finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the Greyhounds’ 79-75 loss to No. 19 Northwestern on Friday.
The Patriot League Men’s Basketball The Rock Player and Rookie of the Week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their own student-athletes.
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zach Thomas, Bucknell, Sr., F, 6-7, Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale
Thomas averaged 27.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game, while shooting .528 (19-for-36) from the floor and .556 (10-for-18) from 3-point range. Against Monmouth, the senior forward posted career-highs with 31 points and 16 rebounds in a 79-78 loss. Thomas turned in his second double-double of the opening weekend, tallying 24 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists in a loss to Arkansas.
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK ROOKIE OF THE WEEK,
Caleb Green, Holy Cross, Fr., G, 5-10, Londonberry, N.Y./Proctor Academy
Green scored 12 points and added three rebounds and two assists in 34 minutes of play to help Holy Cross defeat Sacred Heart, 69-64. His 12 points were the most by a Crusader in his collegiate debut since 2012.
WEEKLY HONORABLE MENTION
Lance Tejada, Lehigh, Jr., G, 6-2, Miramar, Fla./Ely (East Carolina)
Tejada scored a team-high 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting to lead Lehigh to an 84-76 overtime victory over Marist on Saturday night. The junior transfer from East Carolina scored eight points during the final 5:05 of regulation and six points in overtime to help the Mountain Hawks outlast the Red Foxes. Tejada also contributed six rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Karl Charles, Holy Cross, Jr., F, 6-6, Roselle, N.J./Rutgers Prep
Charles led Holy Cross with 23 points, on 8-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, to help Holy Cross to a 69-64 victory over Sacred Heart on Friday. The junior forward also added four rebounds, three assists and one steal in the win. His 23-point performance is one point shy of his career-high.
Cam Gregory, Loyola Maryland, Sr., F, 6-8, Waldorf, Md./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes
Gregory recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds in Loyola Maryland’s loss at No. 19 Northwestern on Friday night. Gregory shot 6-of-11 from the floor to help keep the Greyhounds close throughout the evening.
