Canisius junior forward Jibreel Faulkner will miss the Golden Griffins’ first 16 games of the 2017-18 season, the Canisius athletic department announced Friday.
Faulkner’s suspension stems from an NCAA violation during his time at a previous institution. The Canisius athletic department was made aware of a potential eligibility issue with Faulkner via a phone call from the NCAA in August 2017.
Canisius immediately began the process of reinstatement for Faulkner, and the College has worked with the NCAA to have the issue fully reviewed.
During his period of suspension, Faulkner will continue to be enrolled as a student-athlete at Canisius and will have the ability to fully practice with the team. He will be eligible to return to the Griffs’ active roster on Jan. 7, 2018, when the Griffs travel to play at Siena.
Canisius will officially open the 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon when the team plays at cross-town rival Buffalo. Tipoff in Alumni Arena is set for 1 p.m.
