SANBORN, New York – The MCC men’s basketball team picked up an impressive win its in conference opener Wednesday evening, defeating No. 15 Niagara County Community College by the score of 96-70.
Majesty Brandon hit six 3’s and led all players in scoring with 24, and the Tribune defense held Niagara to 34 percent shooting in the convincing win. It was the Western New York Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Monroe (1-1) opened up a 16-point lead at the break and then tacked on 51 more points in the second half to cruise to the win. A huge advantage on the glass was key, as MCC outrebounded the Thunderwolves 55-33.
Brandon was on fire from deep the moment he came off the bench for the Tribunes. In addition to his 24 points, he also added five assists, six steals, and three rebounds. Mike Kelly Jr. pitched in with 18 points and nine boards off the bench. MCC held a 52-17 edge in bench scoring on the night.
Brien Wilson added a double-double for MCC. The sophomore center tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five blocks. Gilberto Cue had 10 points and five assists, and Kewan Platt contributred 10 points as well.
MCC finished 38-for-76 from the field, while Niagara was 24-for-70.
