Adriano Margiotta fed Dominic Duncan for a goal in the 30th minute, and the McQuaid Jesuit Knights held on to defeat the Canisius Crusaders (VI), 2-1 Friday night at Wegmans Stadium on the campus of Aquinas Institute.
With the win, McQuaid advances to played in the championship of the 2017 Catholic Cup.
Margiotta threaded a ball through the Canisius backline and hit Duncan in stride for the eventual game winner. Duncan leads McQuaid with eight goals.
Dan Malloy netted his fifth of the season and put McQuaid on the scoreboard in the 24th minute when he took a Justin LaFountain pass and found the back of the net.
Brandon Wood converted a penalty kick in the 47th minute to cut the deficit to one and give Canisius momentum.
But McQuaid’s Tommy Gallina delivered from there. The Jesuit Knights senior goalkeeper made a sprawling save on a Bryce Chretien blast from outside the 18-yard box and corralled a header from the ensuing rebound. Gallina finished the game with five saves. He has 24 stops on the season.
McQuaid improved to 6-0 with five shutouts entering play Friday.
The Jesuit Knights will meet the host Aquinas in Saturday’s championship game. A 4 p.m. kickoff is scheduled.
