PITTSFORD, NY — Sophomore Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) scored two second half goals as the RIT (4-1-0) women’s soccer team came back to beat St. John Fisher College (1-4-0), 2-1 at Growney Stadium Thursday evening. White scored twice in four minute span of the second half to give the Tigers the win.
Shots were 13-7 in favor of RIT, including 9-5 on target. The Tigers took six corner kicks to just one for the Cardinals. White led the way with her second and third goals of the season, while Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) and Elena Wolfe (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) each had an assist. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) got the win in net for RIT, making four saves. Melissa McGowan took the loss for Fisher, making seven saves.
RIT had three early shots on net from Sami Alur (Fremont, CA/Irvington) and White, but it was St. John Fisher who struck first. Hannah Buschner tapped home a corner kick from Jackie Romano in the 22nd minute to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Thiel had a shot go high over the crossbar in the 29th minute, and Lauren Chester (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) fired a shot just high in the 40th minute for the Tigers.
RIT tied the match in the 50th minute on White’s first goal of the game. Thiel intercepted a goal kick from McGowan and drove through three Cardinal defenders. She sent in a service that White scored on first-time.
Then, in the 54th minute, White struck again. This time off a free kick. Wolfe sent in a free kick from 30 yards out that White got a head to and scored to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Fisher had a chance to tie in the 77th minute when Mackenzie Winslow broke free of her defender and got a shot off from 17 yards out. Fortunately, Rogers saw the shot and made the save. Winslow got to the rebound, but fired her shot wide.
With the win, RIT moves to 27-8-1 all time versus St. John Fisher.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 when they host SUNY Fredonia at 3 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
