BROCKTON, Mass. – Kevin Kabongo‘s breakaway goal in the 90th minute gave the MCC men’s soccer team an improbable, come-from-behind 3-2 victory over host Massasoit Community College Saturday afternoon.
The Tribunes (2-2-1) twice overcame one-goal deficits and looked destined for overtime when Kabongo took a feed from Matt Murray near midfield. The freshman sprinted past the Warrior defense and scored with just 29 seconds reamining to win it for Monroe.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Tribunes finally got on the board in the 57th minute as Cameron Welling slammed home a rebound to tie it at one. Murray also assisted on that goal.
Massasoit reclaimed the lead in the 79th minute, but Monroe once again battled back. Another rebound did the trick, as Ryan Gray corralled the ball after a Mewah Nyeayea shot and put it home to make it 2-all with 9:25 remaining.
The minutes ticked off, but just as the game seemed headed for an extra session, Kabongo came through.
MCC outshot Massasoit 21-15 on the game.
