BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men’s soccer team came out victorious on Thursday against Alfred University, scoring four goals in the second half to come out on top 4-2.
The Golden Eagles improve to 3-1 on the year while the Saxons have a mark of 0-2 in 2017.
The match was tightly contested as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half. Brockport’s offense created opportunities, putting up nine shots in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Alfred was the first to end the scoring silence, working in a goal five minutes into the half. It didn’t take long for the Brockport offense to post the answer, when Jeff Hibbard notched the equalizer in the 57th minute. The opening Green and Gold goal awoke the Golden Eagle offense, who posted two more scores within one minute.
Quintin Volpe notched Brockport’s second goal in the 60th minute, burying a Hibbard set up on a wide-open net. Less than a minute later, Brockport struck again, this time Noah Mohamed found the back of the net off a Jason Hayes pass to post the 3-1 advantage.
“Hibbard played with great determination, which resulted in him scoring the first goal. Volpe played exceptional and Mercer, Hayes and Connor DeSantis were difference makers in the middle of the field,” head coach Gary LaPietra commented. “Mohamed gave us a great boost off of the bench with his technical ability.”
Brockport would see their lead diminish, when Alfred worked in a goal in the 68th minute, cutting the Green and Gold advantage to 3-2. Volpe added an insurance goal with his second of the game in the 86th minute. The Golden Eagles defense held on to win the game 4-2.
“The guys are working so hard and adjusting to a new system and new teammates,” coach LaPietra remarked. “I am very encouraged with our start to the season.”
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Sept. 10 when they host Ithaca College, with kick-off slated for 1 p.m.
