Tyler Griggs has two more seasons to terrorize local high school pitchers. On Wednesday, the junior infielder put plans in place for his baseball career after graduation from McQuaid Jesuit.
As announced on social media and first reported by the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Griggs committed to play Division I baseball with the University of Connecticut Huskies.
The Jesuit Knights infielder went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in McQuaid’s dramatic come-from-behind victory over Victor in the Class AA semi-finals. His two-out, two-run single keyed a five-run fourth as McQuaid erased a six-run first-inning deficit en route to a 12-8 victory.
The Jesuit Knights claimed their seventh sectional title with a 3-2 win over Rush-Henrietta. They defeated Clarence in the Far West Regional and advanced to the New York State Class AA Semi-final. Griggs reached base in all six McQuaid post-season contests.
He is the second Section V standout to announce his college decision in the off-season. Earlier in the summer, Fairport senior Mike Sabatine committed to play at the University of Maine.
Canandaigua’s Tanner Cooper (Stony Brook), Webster Schroeder’s Shane Marshall (Binghamton) and Livonia’s Reid VanScoter (Binghamton) will start their Division I careers this upcoming season.
Four Section V alums will make the jump from junior college to the Division I level this year. Batavia’s Alex Canty (Monroe Community College) is heading to Southeast Missouri State. Brockport’s Brandon Henshaw (Genesee Community College) will continue at St. Bonaventure University as will Greece Athena’s Mike Magnanti (Finger Lakes Community College). Fellow Athena Trojan Johnny Ricotta (Monroe Community College) will play at Ball State University.
