J.P. Crawford and Rhys Hoskins combined for four hits, two runs and two RBI as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs defeated the Rochester Red Wings 4-3 in International League play at Coca Cola Field, Sunday night.
Crawford tripled home Scott Kingery and scored on a Hoskins single in third as Lehigh Valley took a lead it did not surrender at 2-0.
Hoskins singled and scored on a Dylan Cozens home run in the fifth to give the IronPigs a 4-1 lead.
Brandon Leibrandt allowed one run on two hits over five innings for his third win of the season. Yacksel Rios tossed two innings out of the bullpen for a hold and Edubray Ramos added an inning of relief also for a hold. Pedro Beato hurled a scoreless ninth for his IL-leading 26th save.
Rochester’s John Ryan Murphy connected on his fourth home run of the season in the seventh. The Red Wings catcher also walked to lead the fifth and scored on Niko Goodrum‘s two-out base hit.
Matt Hague reached on an error with one out in the eighth and scored on an Edgar Corcino double to cut the deficit to one, but an inning-ending double play with runners on first and second halted the rally.
J.B. Shuck worked a one-out walk in the ninth but was left stranded.
Rochester left six runners on base and went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Tim Melville took the loss. The right-hander allowed four runs on seven hits over four and a third innings.
A quartet of Red Wing relievers hurled 4.2 scoreless frames. Craig Breslow retired both batters he faced. Mason Melotakis worked two-thirds of inning. Alan Busenitz fanned four of the five batters he faced, and John Curtiss worked a perfect ninth.
Rochester (51-41) returns home Monday for eight games. Rochester hosts a doubleheader with Charlotte (Chicago White Sox) to start the homestead. A 5:05 pm first pitch is slated.
The Wings trail Lehigh Valley (57-37) by five game for the wildcard spot in the playoffs. The IronPigs come to Frontier Field for a three-game set August 1st-3rd.
