ROCHESTER, N.Y. — June 16, 2017 — St. Bonaventure’s now-annual men’s basketball game at Rochester’s Blue Cross Arena will have a new presenting sponsor and a new name this year.
Alesco Advisors, an independent, employee-owned investment advisory firm which serves institutional and individual investors from its offices in Rochester and Buffalo, N.Y., and San Francisco, Calif., will present the Alesco Advisors Roc City Hoops Classic between St. Bonaventure and Vermont on Saturday, Dec. 16. The announcement was made Friday during the Golf With The Bonnies tournament at Eagle Vale Golf Club in Fairport, N.Y.
In addition to Alesco Advisors’ presenting sponsorship of the game, they remain a season-long sponsor for St. Bonaventure Athletics.
“Alesco Advisors is proud to partner with Blue Cross Arena and St. Bonaventure University to bring big-time, Division-I college basketball to downtown Rochester,” said Alesco Advisors President Jim Gould. “This is a great sports town and our community deserves to have quality athletic events like this to embrace. We are honored to serve as the lead sponsor for the Roc City Hoops Classic.”
“We are so thankful to Jim Gould, Fritz Minges and the whole Alesco Advisors team for their support,” said St. Bonaventure Athletics Director Tim Kenney. “Their sponsorship enables us to keep bringing Division I basketball to the great sports fans of the Rochester area. Alesco Advisors and the Rochester community help make Blue Cross Arena a home-court advantage for the Bonnies. We’re grateful for that support.”
The Alesco Advisors Roc City Hoops Classic will match two exceptionally successful programs.
St. Bonaventure will return four starters from last year’s 20-win team, led by two-time All-Conference senior point guard Jaylen Adams. Adams is joined by senior guards Matt Mobley and Idris Taqqee. Mobley was a third team All-Conference selection last season, when he and Adams combined to average 39.7 points per game. Sophomore Josh Ayenireturns as the starter at power forward. The Bonnies are coached by 2016 A-10 Coach of the Year Mark Schmidt, who will be in his 11th season. Over the past three seasons, St. Bonaventure has won a total of 60 games.
Vermont, which is coached by John Becker, won the 2017 American East regular season and tournament titles. The Catamounts lost to Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing their season 29-6. Vermont features 2016-17 America East Rookie of the Year Anthony Lamb, a graduate of Greece Athena High School near Rochester.
The Bonnies have been regulars at Blue Cross Arena, hosting 11 games there since 2000 including Atlantic 10 Conference games each of the last three years. In January, the Bonnies topped Fordham 73-53. In 2016, Marcus Posley scored 47 points to lead St. Bonaventure to an 89-83 win over Saint Joseph’s. On Jan. 14, 2015, St. Bonaventure defeated George Mason 75-55. The average attendance at those three games was 5,717 and two of them drew crowds of over 6,000.
Tickets for the Alesco Advisors Roc City Hoops Classic will be released in July.
