ROCHESTER, NY – Rochester Red Wings left-hander Nik Turley has been named the International League Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Turley made one start and fanned a career-high 15 batters over 6.0 scoreless innings on Tuesday vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 15 punch outs set a Frontier Field record. The first 10 outs of the game were recorded via strikeout and he fanned the side four times. The former Yankee 50th round selection scattered four hits and issued two walks.
Turley was rewarded for his efforts as Minnesota selected his contract on Sunday and he made his Major League debut in a start that afternoon in San Francisco, allowing four runs over 4.0+ innings.
This is the third IL Pitcher of the Week award for a Red Wing this season, joining Jose Berrios twice. A Rochester pitcher has earned a weekly award a league-high 11 times since the beginning of 2015.
