OMAHA, Neb. – Xavier baseball won its second straight BIG EAST Championship on Sunday, beating No. 20 St. John’s 7-6 at TD Ameritrade Park.
It was XU’s ninth straight win in league tournament action and clinched the Musketeers’ third title in four years in the BIG EAST.
Freshman Conor Grammes was named the BIG EAST Championships Most Outstanding Player after hitting .600 (9-for-15) in the tournament with a homer and five RBI.
Junior Will LaRue went 3-for-3 with a walk, driving in the go-ahead run with an RBI single through the right side as part of a four-run seventh inning. XU trailed 3-0 and 6-3 in the game, battling back each time to defeat the second-seeded Red Storm.
XU improved to 32-25 overall with a seventh straight win, sweeping to the tournament title for a second straight season. St. John’s went to 42-11 overall and is a strong bet to make the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection, which would give the BIG EAST two bids for the first time in its current configuration.
The Musketeers will learn their NCAA Tournament destination on Monday as the NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for Noon ET on ESPN2.
