New York tacked on runs with Matt Holliday‘s sacrifice fly in the sixth and Gardner’s RBI single in the seventh that lead the Yankees to win the series. Luis Severino (3-2) allowed four hits over eight strong innings, struck out seven, walked just one batter and threw a career-high 114 pitches. Severino, who lowered his ERA to 3.11, had been 0-1 in four outings since beating Boston on April 26. Dellin Betances recorded his fourth save as the Royals were shut out for a major league-high fifth time.

BALTIMORE — Jose Berrios took a two-hitter into the seventh inning, and Kennys Vargas drove in two runs for the Twins, who have won six of seven and are a major league-best (14-5) on the road. Minnesota jumped to a 4-0 lead and withstood solo homers by J.J. Hardy, Chris Davis and Jonathan Schoop to complete its fourth sweep of the season matching its total of all last year. Berrios (3-0) allowed three runs and four hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out seven batters. This year, he’s won all three starts since being recalled from Triple-A Rochester earlier this month.

MILWAUKEE — Ryan Goins’ sixth-inning grand slam was one of four homers hit by the Blue Jays in a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. The Blue Jays swept the two-game interleague series and wrapped up a seven-game road trip with three straight victories. Kevin Pillar, Devon Travis, and Jose Bautista hit solo shots for the Blue Jays, who have homered in four straight games. Bautista’s towering shot went off the Miller Lite sign high above the center-field wall. Marcus Stroman (5-2) allowed four hits and a season-high four walks but won his fourth straight game. Matt Garza had his worst outing of the season by allowing six runs including three homers.

OAKLAND — Sonny Gray struck out a season-high 11 over seven strong innings, Chris Davis homered and the A’s defeated the Marlins. Gray (2-1) was dominant while earning his second straight win. The right-hander, who began the season on the disabled list because of a strained lat, retired the first nine batters, struck out the side twice and pitched out of a pair of jams to strand runners at third. Gray walked one and allowed three hits. Jed Lowrie matched his career high with four hits including two doubles, and Matt Joyce reached base three times and scored to help the A’s earn a split of the two-game interleague series.

PHOENIX — Jake Lamb homered off a left-hander for only the second time this season, five Diamondbacks drove in at least one run and Arizona took down Chicago to complete a three-game sweep. The Diamondbacks won eight of their last nine games and are 10 games above .500 for the first time since 2011. Arizona scored six runs in the fifth inning, chasing starter Jose Quintana and building a six-run lead, but managed to hold off a White Sox rally.

CLEVELAND — Billy Hamilton scored from first base on Zack Cozart‘s two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Cincinnati Reds over the Cleveland Indians 4-3 on Wednesday night. Hamilton reached after narrowly beating out an apparent game-ending double play — he was ruled safe after a replay review, putting runners at first and third for Cozart. Michael Lorenzen (3-0) pitched the eighth, and Raisel Iglesias retired Brantley with two on in the ninth for his eighth save. Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings. He was removed after retiring the first batter in the sixth. As reliever Boone Logan entered the game, the umpires called for the tarp. Andrew Miller replaced Logan following the lengthy delay. Logan was credited with an appearance despite not throwing a pitch.

WASHINGTON — Anthony Rendon continued doing damage Wednesday night, belting a three-run first-inning homer, his eighth of the season, in the Nationals’ 5-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. He becomes the fourth Washington player to surpass 30 RBI with 31. Tanner Roark (4-2) allowed a run while completing seven innings for the first time in seven starts. He allowed eight hits and two walks while striking out eight to the Nationals win a third straight.
Mariners rookie Sam Gaviglio (0-1) allowed all five runs over six innings as the Mariners lost their fifth straight. Seattle’s Robinson Cano went 3 for 4, including an RBI single and a double that center fielder Michael Taylor‘s glove prevented from being a home run.

PHILADELPHIA — Tyler Chatwood allowed just one hit in seven scoreless innings and struck out a season-high eight batters, helping the Rockies beat the Philadelphia Phillies to win their fourth straight game and their major league-best 18th on the road. Chatwood befuddled the Phillies, allowing only a two-out single by Andrew Knapp in the fifth inning. It was the third time Chatwood (4-6) earned a win in his career while allowing just one hit. He threw 112 pitches, the most since 2011 when he was with the Los Angeles Angels. The Rockies pounded starter Jeremy Hellickson (5-2) for seven runs in the third.

TAMPA BAY — Steven Souza Jr. homered twice to rally the Tampa Bay Rays to a victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Colby Rasmus also went deep for the Rays and Erasmo Ramirez pitched six strong innings in his third start of the season. Ramirez (3-0) gave up four hits and walked one while striking out two. He learned something from Pujols’ homer, which put him behind 2-0 just three batters into the game. Albert Pujols hit his 597th career home run, a two-run shot in the first for the Angels. It was his sixth of the season.

BOSTON — Chris Sale cruised into the fifth inning, then was rewarded in the seventh when the Boston batters erupted for seven runs on their way to a 9-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night. Sale (5-2) struck out six, falling short in his attempt to become the first pitcher in baseball’s modern era to strike out at least 10 batters in nine straight games in a season. Dustin Pedroia scored the tiebreaking run on a wild pitch, then singled in two more runners as the Red Sox turned a 3-1 deficit into a five-run lead and earned their third straight victory. Sam Travis had two singles for the Red Sox in his major league debut.
Mike Napoli homered for Texas, which has lost three of four to follow a 10-game winning streak.

NEW YORK — Hunter Renfroe put the Padres ahead, then Brad Hand held on at the end. And when it was finally over, San Diego had one of its most exhilarating wins during a difficult season. Renfroe snapped an eighth-inning tie with a titanic home run , Hand pitched out of a huge jam in the ninth and the young Padres took advantage of a floundering New York Mets bullpen in rallying for a 6-5 road victory. After being down by four runs, the Padres pulled even when Wil Myers lined a two-run single off the top of the right-center fence in the seventh. Ryan Buchter (3-2) worked a hitless inning for the win.

ATLANTA — Gift Ngoepe doubled to drive in Andrew McCutchen for the go-ahead run before Pittsburgh hit three straight homers during a seven-run 10th inning to beat Atlanta. Pittsburgh’s Jose Osuna hit a bases-loaded, two-run single off Jose Ramirez in the ninth to tie it at 5. After Ngoepe’s double, the Pirates put the game away with Harrison’s two-run single, followed by homers from David Freese, Osuna and Jordy Mercer all off Josh Collmenter (0-2). Freese’s homer was a two-run shot.
The Braves took the lead with four runs in the sixth and added a run in the eighth for a 5-3 lead. Jace Peterson hit a two-run double in the four-run sixth. Julio Teheran allowed no earned runs in six innings.

CHICAGO — Anthony Rizzo homered twice, Kyle Hendricks tossed seven strong innings and the Cubs hung on to beat the Giants after closer Wade Davis gave up a two-run homer in the ninth inning. Rizzo hit solo homers off Matt Moore (2-5) in the second and fourth innings for his 14th career multihomer game. He has four homers over his last four games and 11 on the season. Hendricks is 3-1 over his last six starts with an ERA of 1.96 — gave up two runs and five hits. He struck out five and walked none over seven innings, retiring 15 of the last 16 batters he faced.
Detroit Tigers (22-23) 6

HOUSTON — Jose Iglesias finished a triple shy of the cycle, Ian Kinsler had two hits and scored twice, and Detroit beat the Houston Astros 6-3 on Wednesday night to snap a three-game skid. Iglesias, who scored three runs, doubled to lead off the eighth. He moved to second on a single by Kinsler before scoring on Alex Avila‘s RBI grounder off Chris Devenski (3-3) to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. Following an intentional walk to Miguel Cabrera, Kinsler scored on Victor Martinez‘s RBI grounder. Iglesias hit a two-run blast in the ninth. Evan Gattis and Norichika Aoki hit sacrifice flies in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to tie the game at 2. Alex Bregman hit a solo home run with two outs in the ninth off Justin Wilson.

LOS ANGELES — Mike Leake allowed four hits over eight innings and dropped his ERA to 1.91, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers. Leake (5-2) struck out five and walked none while allowing an earned run. He’s yet to allow more than three runs in a start this season. Yadier Molina hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
