BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team (16-30, 8-12 MAC) fell on Saturday afternoon at Audobon Field to the Ohio Bobcats by the score of 12-1. The Bobcats were able to put the game away in the seventh inning as they put up nine runs and sent 15 batters to the plate.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bobcats were able to break through with the first runs of the game in the second inning as they plated two runners. The Bobcats opened the inning with a single and a double before the first run came around to score as Shawn Dubin threw a pitch to the backstop. Evan Bourn then stepped in and collected an RBI sacrifice fly out to left field to give Ohio the early 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the fourth inning as they collected a pair of singles, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly that scored the runner from third to give Ohio the 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless bottom half of the fourth, the Bobcats looked like they were going to add another run on the board as they had a runner on second base with two outs. Tony Giannini stepped in and hit the ball right back up the middle but Ben Haefner made a great diving stop and threw out the base runner attempting to score from second base to get UB out of the inning.
Buffalo was finally able to break through off of Ohio Starting pitcher Michael Klein in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chris Kwitzer led off the inning with his second hit of the day and after an out, Brian Dudek pounded an RBI double over the left fielders head to plate Kwitzer from first and make the score 3-1 in favor of the Bobcats.
Ohio was able to put the game away in the seventh inning as they batted around their lineup and scored nine runs to take the dominant 12-1 lead.
Kwitzer continued to swing a great bat at the plate for the Bulls in the loss as he finished off his day going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Dudek was able to collect an RBI double as he finished off his day going 1-for-4. Phillip Tomasulo and Ben Haefner were the only other UB players with a hit in the game as they both singled in the eighth.
The Bulls and Bobcats will return to Amherst Audobon Field tomorrow afternoon for the final game of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm as Brent Cleland will take the mound for the Bulls. Sunday will also be Senior Day for 10 Buffalo seniors.
