ROCHESTER, NY – 9th-ranked Oswego State used a late surge to get past the University of Rochester baseball team 13-4 on Wednesday evening at Towers Field.
The win is Oswego’s 25th of the year as the Lakers move to 25-8 while Rochester drops to 7-17 on the year. UR played in its final non-conference matchup of the year as the remaining eight games on the schedule are Liberty League contests at home.
Rochester was able to pound out 10 hits in the loss, aided by multi-hit efforts from Jake Hertz, Pete Carrier and Aiden Finch. Finch finished 3-3 with a double, 2 RBI and a run. Hertz was 2-4 with 2 runs and a stolen base.
Oswego was paced by Eric Hamilton who had a 4-5 day at the plate with an RBI and a run. Josh Hoagland was 3-4 with a triple, 3 RBI and two runs while Zach Whelan went 2-3 with a double, 2 RBI and 2 runs.
On the mound Rochester used a combination of six pitchers, with each throwing no more than two innings. Tyler McConway, Jack Denzer and Tyler Pauly each had scoreless outings. The loss went to starter David Strandberg.
The Lakers used four pitchers in the contest with relievers Bobby Zywicki, Brad Wroblewski and Brandon Schultzkie holding UR to just two hits over the final six innings. Zywicki picked up the win going four innings in relief.
Hoagland got the visitors on the board in the top of the first inning, tripling in two runs. In the bottom of the inning, Finch ripped a two-run double to tie the score.
Oswego got two runs in each of the next two innings and led 6-2 after two and a half.
Rochester chipped away, getting RBI singles from Will Conroy in the third and Tyler Schmidt in the fourth and it was 6-4.
The Lakers then added a run in the seventh on a groundout and then exploded for six runs in the eighth inning, coming on six hits.
Rochester’s next games are slated for Saturday starting at 1 pm, hosting Rensselaer in a Liberty League doubleheader.
