Rochester rallied for four runs over the final two innings to take the lead but Lane Adams hit a walk-off two-run single in the 9th inning as the Gwinnett Braves topped the Red Wings 7-6 Wednesday evening at Coolray Field.
Adams delivered the walk-off hit for the Braves (8-5) after Gwinnett loaded the bases. Alex Wimmers (0-1) retired the first batter of the 9th inning before issuing three consecutive walks prior to the winning hit.
The Red Wings (7-5) had just two runs, both on solo home runs by Mitch Garver and Daniel Palka, through seven innings before Matt Hague and Palka delivered RBI singles in the 8th to make it 5-4 Braves.
Leonardo Reginatto opened the 9th with a solid single for the Wings. Following a strikeout, Quintin Berry hit a slow grounder to second base that was thrown away. The error put two on with one out for J.B. Shuck. Shuck fouled several pitches off before hitting the eighth pitch of the at-bat from David Hernandez (1-0) into the right-field corner for a two-run triple that gave Rochester the lead at 6-5.
Gwinnett took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st on Matt Kemp’s sacrifice fly against Jose Berrios. Garver took Braves starter Matt Wisler deep in the 2nd to tie the game at one and Palka went deep in the 4th to make it 2-1 Rochester. The Braves took the lead 3-2 in the bottom half of the 4th as a dropped fly ball allowed the tying run to score and Adams followed with an RBI single. Kyle Kubitza hit a solo home run in the 6th as Gwinnett extended its lead to 4-2. The Braves added a run in the 7th to extend their advantage to 5-2.
Berrios allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits, including a homer, and two walks in 5.0+ innings.
Wisler surrendered just the two solo home runs among seven hits with five strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
Shuck, Palka, Reginatto and Tommy Field all recorded multi-hit games for the Wings while Shuck and Palka tallied two RBI apiece.
