EDINBURG, TX – The UTRGV Vaqueros handed the University at Buffalo Bulls baseball team their ninth straight loss on Sunday afternoon by the score of 6-4. The Bulls fall to 4-12 on the season while the Vaqueros are now 15-7.
After a 1-2-3 inning by the Bulls in the first, the Vaqueros jumped all over Buffalo starter Shawn Dubin as they struck for four runs. UTRGV loaded the bases and then produced a single to score the first run of the day before Dubin walked in another run to make it 2-0. Conrad McMahon then doubled to plate two more runs and give the home team the 4-0 lead through one inning.
The Bulls then got two runs back in the top of the third inning as they were able to record three straight singles by Phillip Tomasulo, Ben Haefner and Alex Thrower to load the bases. Kyle Brennan then stepped in and recorded a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Tomasulo from third. Vinny Mallaro then notched a RBI single to right field to score Thrower from third and cut the UTRGV lead to 4-2.
After a scoreless fourth, the Bulls were able to tie the game up at four in the top of the fifth inning as they notched two runs. The Bulls had a couple of quick outs before Brennan doubled to left field and Mallaro earned a walk. Brian Dudek then dug in and produced a two-RBI triple to deep center field to plate Brennan and Mallaro to tie the game at four.
After a couple of scoreless innings, the Vaqueros were able to break through with the game-winning runs in the eighth inning. UTRGV got a walk and a double to score the first run before Noah Lee earned a walk to score the final run of the game, giving the Vaqueros the 6-4 edge heading into the ninth.
Conner Regan led off the inning with a single but the Bulls offense couldn’t bring him around to score as Thrower grounded into a game-ending double play to give the home team the 6-4 win.
Eight different UB players collected one hit on Sunday led by Dudek who finished off his game going 1-for-2 with two RBI, a triple and two walks. Mallaro and Brennan each finished off their games going 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run in the loss.
Dubin finished off his day on the mound going 5.0 innings while allowing four hits, four runs and striking out a season-high seven batters. Andrew White pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball as he allowed three hits and struck out one batter.
The Bulls and UTRGV will return close out their four-game series on Monday night at 8:00 pm.
