CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Boston University senior forward Justin Alston earned his first Patriot League The Rock Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor, after helping the Terriers win a pair of games last week, while averaging 19.0 points and 5.0 rebounds. Colgate freshman forward Will Rayman earned his fourth The Rock Rookie of the Week honor this season after scoring 28 points and pulling down seven rebounds to help the Raiders sweep their season series against Army West Point.
Alston and the Terriers sit two games behind Bucknell for the Patriot League lead and travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to match up with Rayman’s Raiders squad on Wednesday evening in a game that will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network. Coverage of the Boston Unviersity at Colgate game is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The Terriers will host first-place Bucknell on Sunday live on the CBS Sports Network (Noon EST), while Colgate will travel to take on Loyola Maryland on Sunday at noon.
Bucknell forward Zach Thomas averaged 23.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists to earn a spot on the weekly honor roll, as did Navy junior guard Bryce Dulin, who continues his hot-shooting in Patriot League play, after averaging 14.5 points on 50-percent shooting from the field last week. Senior center Tim Kempton had a pair of double-doubles and became Lehigh’s all-time leading rebounder last week as the Mountain Hawks split a pair of games.
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Justin Alston, Boston University, Sr., F, 6-8, Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll
Alston averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks, while shooting 65-percent from the floor during a 2-0 week for Boston University, helping them clinch their eighth 10-plus conference-win season in the last nine years. Against American Alston shot 7-of-10 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line to finish with a game-high 21 points, while finishing with six rebounds and two blocked shots. Alston scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half to lead a comeback in the 67-64 win over the Eagles. Alston also finished with 17 points, four rebounds and two blocks in a 78-63 victory over Loyola Maryland on Saturday.
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK ROOKIE OF THE WEEK,
Will Rayman, Colgate, Fr., F, 6-8, New York, N.Y./The Millbrook School
Rayman scored 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-5 from deep to help Colgate secure its first season sweep over Army West Point in eight years. Rayman also pulled down seven rebounds and registered three steals in the victory. The performance was his five 20-point plus effort and 19th double-digit game of the season. In League games, Rayman is fifth in the Patriot League averaging 15.9 points per game.
WEEKLY HONORABLE MENTION
Zach Thomas, Bucknell, Jr., F, 6-7, Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale
Thomas averaged 23.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists during a 1-1 week for Bucknell. In Monday’s win over Holy Cross, Thomas scored a career-high 27 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-5 from distance. He also shot 9-of-10 from the free-throw line to go with his six rebounds and three assists in an 82-68 win over Holy Cross. Thomas followed with his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in a 79-71 loss to Lehigh.
Bryce Dulin, Navy, Jr., G, 6-4, Nixa, Mo./Nixa
Dulin averaged a team-best 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds, while chipping in 1.5 steals during a 2-0 week for Navy. The junior guard shot 50-percent (8-for-16) from the floor, 60-percent (3-of-5) from 3-point and 83.3-percent (10-of-12) from the free-throw line. Against Loyola Maryland, Dulin finished with 11 points and nine rebounds to help earn a 62-59 victory. He followed that with 18 points and eight rebounds in a, 68-60, win over Lafayette on Saturday evening.
Tim Kempton, Lehigh, Sr, C/F, 6-10, Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep
Kempton posted a pair of double-doubles, averaging 17.0 points and 10.5 rebounds during a 1-1 week for Lehigh. Kempton led the Mountain Hawks to a 79-71 victory over Bucknell on Wednesday with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while becoming just the third player in Patriot League history to eclipse the 1,000-rebound total. Kempton finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds in a 61-45 loss to Holy Cross on Sunday, while passing Daren Queenan to become Lehigh’s all-time leading rebounder with 1,015.
