Jason Hawkes netted a game-high 15 and Jalen Pickett added 14, but the Aquinas Li’l Irish lost for the first time in four games. Hawkes connected on 7 of 11 shots from the floor including one of three from behind the arc. Pickett posted team-highs with eight rebounds and five assists. AQ outrebounded Liverpool by one and converted nine offensive boards into a 14-8 advantage in second-chance points. Sincere Alston came off the bench to connect on all four of his shots from the floor and three of six free throw attempts to finish with 11 points. Eric Carter scored seven points including a pair of free throws at 5:16 of the fourth quarter to pull AQ within two at 43-41. The junior finished a layup next time down the floor to make it a 45-43 game. It was as close as Aquinas got. Carter had four rebounds and two assists. Anthony Flegler chipped in four points and two assists.
Liverpool’s Charles Pride posted game-highs with nine rebounds and six assists. The junior guard scored 12 points on five of nine shooting from the floor. Cooper Chaffee added 10. The Warriors shot 52.3 percent (23 of 44). Liverpool outscored Aquinas in the paint (28-26) and off turnovers (12-8). Liverpool jumped to a 14-6 advantage after the first quarter and maintained the eight-point margin at half. Aquinas closed the gap after the third, 39-34. AQ took an earlier matchup between the teams, 67-64. The Li’l Irish took home the Martin Luther King Showcase in Erie, Pa. last weekend with two wins and knocked off Edison Tech on Wednesday. AQ hosts Fairport next Saturday as part of the RAP Invitational. A 7:30 pm tipoff is scheduled.
