CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Bucknell junior center Nana Foulland was named The Rock Patriot League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season, after averaging a double-double with 16.0 points and 12.0 rebounds to lead the Bison to a pair of wins to open League play. Colgate freshman forward Will Rayman earns his first The Rock Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor after breaking Adonal Foyle’s single-game freshman scoring record at Colgate with 34 points in a win over Lafayette last Friday.
Loyola Maryland’s Jarred Jones earns honorable mention after averaging 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in the Greyhounds first two League games. Boston University forward Justin Alston also averaged a double-double with 13.5 points and 12.0 rebounds to help his team start 2-0 in League play. Lafayette’s Matt Klinewski scored a career-high 33 points in a loss to Colgate, before scoring 13 points to help clinch Head Coach Fran O’Hanlon’s 300th career victory, while American forward Mark Gasperini averaged 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds to help American go 1-1 to start League play.
Conference play resumes on Thursday, January 5 with all five League games on the Patriot League Network (PLN). Lafayette’s matchup with Army West Point will also be broadcast live on SiriusXM’s Heritage Radio Sports Network (Sirius 132, XM 203)
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nana Foulland, Bucknell, Jr., C, 6-9, Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic
Foulland posted a pair of double-doubles to open League play, helping the Bison to a 2-0 start. Foulland averaged 16.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks over the two-game stretch, while shooting 57.9 percent from the floor. In Bucknell’s Patriot League opener at Navy, he finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds to edge the Mids, 59-55. Foulland scored 20 points and pulled down 12 more rebounds and blocked two shots to defeat Army on Monday. On the season Foulland is averaging 14.7 points per game, is second in the League averaging 8.5 rebounds and is the blocks leader, averaging 2.1 per game. He is tied for 17th in the nation with seven double-doubles.
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL THE ROCK ROOKIE OF THE WEEK,
Will Rayman, Colgate, Fr., F, 6-8, New York, N.Y./Millbrook School
In his first Patriot League game Rayman scored a career-high 34 points to break Adonal Foyle’s freshman single-game scoring record at Colgate. Rayman went 11-of-20 from the field, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range, while pulling down five rebounds to help the Raiders defeat Lafayette, 85-75. He finished with 15 points and six rebounds in an overtime loss to American on Monday evening. Rayman is sixth in the Patriot League in scoring (15.1 ppg).
WEEKLY HONORABLE MENTION
Jarred Jones, Loyola Maryland, Sr., F, 6-6, Havre de Grace, Md./John Carroll School
In two Patriot League games Jarred Jones averaged 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals to help the Greyhounds go 1-1. Against American in their League opener, Jones led the way with his fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He added four assists and two blocks to help slip past the Eagles, 68-66. Jones scored a team-high 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds in a 78-69 loss to Lafayette on Monday evening. Jones is tied for fourth in the League in scoring (16.0 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (7.5 rpg).
Justin Alston, Boston University, Sr., F, 6-8, Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll
Alston averaged 13.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks, while shooting 52.6 percent from the field to help Boston University start League play 2-0. The senior forward had 13 points and 15 rebounds in a 61-55 win victory over Holy Cross in their Patriot League opener. Against Lehigh, Alston led BU with 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot, while helping a defense that limited Lehigh to under 40 percent shooting for the first time this season.
Matt Klinewski, Lafayette, Jr., F, 6-8, Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional
Klinewski averaged 23.0 points and 6.5 rebounds to help the Leopards split their first two Patriot League games. Against Colgate, Klinewski went for a career-high 33 points on 15-of-19 shooting, while pulling down seven rebounds and blocking two shots in the losing effort. He scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and had two assists to help Lafayette defeat Loyola Maryland, 78-69 on Monday evening. Klinewski is second in the League in scoring (16.4 ppg) and seventh in rebounding (6.2 rpg).
Mark Gasperini, American, Fr., F, 6-10, Brookline, Mass./Brimmer and May
Gasperini shot 62.5 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range to help American go 1-1 during the opening week of Patriot League play. The freshman forward averaged 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game during the two-game stretch. Against Loyola Maryland, Gasperini finished with 18 points, five rebounds and three blocks in a 68-66 loss to the Greyhounds. He helped the Eagles rebound against Colgate, finishing with his first collegiate double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) to defeat the Raiders in overtime, 67-64.
