HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Horizon League office named Carson Williams its men’s basketball freshman of the week for the second time this season. Williams’ honor comes after the Norse posted an impressive 70-48 thumping of an Eastern Washington squad that was ranked in the top-65 of the RPI.
The native of Owenton, Kentucky (Owensboro County HS), tallied a career-high 17 points while just missing the double-double with nine rebounds. Williams also drew the task of guarding the Eagles’ Bogdan Bilznyuk, who entered as the nation’s 14th best scorer at 22.7 ppg, and held the prolific scorer to just 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting.
This is the second time Williams was named Horizon League freshman of the week. He picked up the accolade after the opening weekend of play (Nov. 14) when he scored 15 points in the season-opener against Earlham and followed with a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double at Illinois.
Williams is fourth on the team in scoring at 9.9 points and third in rebounding at 5.6 rebounds per game.
NKU has now collected four weekly honors from the League, including each of the last three weeks. Drew McDonald (Dec. 5) and Lavone Holland II (Dec. 12) collected player of the week nods the two previous weeks.
Northern Kentucky is off to an 8-3 start, which includes a five-game winning-streak that is the longest since Feb. 2012 when the team won six in a row. The Norse have also won seven of their last eight outings and continue climbing the RPI charts, currently checking in at No. 142.
NKU hosts Brescia at 7 p.m., Wednesday before closing out the non-conference slate at No. 11/13 West Virginia Friday afternoon at four.
