PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore guard Lamarr Kimble scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and added nine assists as the Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team came back from a late deficit to beat Princeton, 76-68, on Wednesday night at Jadwin Gym.
Junior Shavar Newkirk scored a game-high 19 points – including 10-of-11 from the free-throw line – and pulled in eight boards of his own, while freshman Charlie Brown scored 12 points and sophomore Markell Lodge added eight points and nine rebounds. Spencer Weisz led the Tigers with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists.
Saint Joseph’s (5-4) led most of the way, pushing a five-point halftime lead to its high-water mark of 11 just a minute into the second half after back-to-back three-pointers by Kimble and Brown.
SJU led by 10, 59-49, with 10:41 to play before Princeton (4-5) clawed back into the game. Steven Cook scored five points in eight second to cut the lead in half, and a three by Devin Cannady tied the game at 59 with 8:38 to go. After a pair of free throws by Brendan Casper, Weisz hit a three to give the Tigers their first lead of the night, 62-61, with six and a half minutes remaining.
Both teams went nearly three minutes without a point before Amir Bell who two free throws with 3:58 on the clock to put the Tigers up by three. It was all Saint Joseph’s from there, however, as consecutive buckets from Newkirk and Brown ended a seven-minute field goal drought and put the Hawks ahead for good at 65-64 with three minutes to go.
Freshman Nick Robinson came through with his only four points of the night with under a minute to go before Kimble and Newkirk put the game away at the free throw line.
The Hawks would end up holding the Tigers to just a single field goal – a three-pointer with eight seconds left – over the final 6:33 of the game.
In a game that saw the teams shoot a combined 37 percent from the floor, Saint Joseph’s dominated on the boards, outrebounding Princeton by a 58-34 margin; a 19-7 edge on the offensive boards translated into a 13-0 advantage in second chance points for SJU.
The Hawks are idle until Sunday, when they travel to Illinois State for a 4 p.m. (EST) game.
