BALTIMORE – Luke Johnson (Lexington, Kentucky/Lexington Catholic High School) and River Reed (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan High School) have signed National Letters of Intent and will comprise the Loyola University Maryland men’s basketball Class of 2021, Head Coach G.G. Smith announced today.
“We are pleased to bring Luke and River into our program,” Smith said. “Both come from very good, winning programs, and they are two players who can come in and contribute quickly. River and Luke will fit into our program, and we think they are going to be very good players in the Patriot League.”
Johnson showed the ability to be a high-volume scorer as a combo guard at Lexington Catholic High School. He averaged 23.2 points per game during 2015-2016 as a junior for the Knights, a program where Smith had his first coaching position during the 1999-2000 season.
The 6-foot-3 Johnson shot 48 percent from the field during that season’s 26 games, and he also made 42 3-pointers. Johnson got to the free-throw line a team-high 149 times, and once there, he made 75.8 percent of his foul shots.
For his efforts during his junior season, Johnson earned All-Lexington City, All-District 43 and All-Region First Team honors. In addition to his scoring totals, Johnson averaged more than seven assists and four rebounds per game last season.
He competed for the Kentucky Grind during AAU play, as well. Johnson’s older brother, Tanner, is a freshman on the Bryant University men’s basketball team.
A 6-foot-9 post player from San Antonio, Reed earned All-District, All-Area and All-Region honors for the Reagan Rattlers during his junior season in 2015-2016 when he nearly averaged a double-double with 15.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. He made 59 percent of his field goals and was a 73 percent shooter from the charity stripe.
Reed opened the 2015-2016 season by scoring 10 or more points in 16-straight games. During that run he had four 21-plus point contests, including 25-point outbursts against Seguin and Wyatt High Schools. In all, he scored 10 or more 25 times and had nine games with 20 or more. He posted 16 double-doubles and 17 total games with 10 or more rebounds.
Reed was a unanimous All-District 26-6A First Team player while also earning Academic All-District honors for his work in the classroom. He took a considerable stride as a junior after earning All-District Second Team recognition as a sophomore. He finished the 2014-2015 season averaging eight points and seven rebounds per game as the Rattlers won the 26-6A District Title
He played AAU basketball for the San Antonio Basketball Organization (SABO) WahawksHis sister is a senior at Baylor University where she is the starting setter for the Bears’ volleyball team. His grandfather, Sanford Reed, played basketball at Southwestern University, and his uncle, Ray Carroll, was a hoops player at Texas State.
