AMHERST, Mass. – The St. Bonaventure University men’s soccer team fell to the UMass Minutemen, 1-0, Wednesday evening.

UMass scored the game’s lone goal in the 68th minute as Kevin Boino received as pass from Henry Steinkamp and finished from five yards out.

The Bonnies’ defense held tough as the Minutemen pressed most of the first half and second half leading up to the goal. UMass outshot the Bonnies, 5-4, in the first half. Both teams earned six shots in the second half, as the Bonnies’ late-game pressure evened out the shot total.

St. Bona’s sophomore keeper Luke Iacobellis made four saves.

St. Bonaventure made the most of its chances as seven shots went on net compared to the Minutemens’ four.

The Brown and White’s best scoring chance came immediately after the goal as a pair of Bonnies elevated and fought the UMass keeper for a header roughly five yards out. The Bonnies jarred the keeper on the attempt, but the ball was sent wide.

Later in the half in the 79th minute, Jon-Michael Perkins danced around the defense into the box and squared himself up with the goal. He sent a shot on net, but the UMass keeper was there to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Of the Bonnies’ 10 shots, Paul Afful accounted for three. Perkins fired two shots, while Kwame Opoku, Noel Orozco, Kieran Toland, Isaiah Wilson and Nikko Richards had one apiece.

In the Bonnies’ four conference games so far, they have put nearly half of their shots on net, as 20 of their 44 total strikes have gone on goal. SBU is averaging 11.0 shots per game.
