HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Jacob Means (Cowley County CC) finished 4-for-4 with five RBI, and the Wellsville Nitros defeated the Genesee Rapids 19-11 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action Saturday night at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex.
The Wellsville Nitros came out on fire, scoring three runs on two hits.
Genesee shot back with two runs on one hit from Joe Chapman (Cedarville) to round out the score after one inning of play at 3-2.
In the top of the second, Brian Wasilewski (University of Buffalo) was the leadoff hitter for the Nitros. He took the first pitch of the inning and went yard for a solo shot to make the score 4-2. Carson Schrode (Tennessee-Martin) followed with a double. Two more hits were recorded from Dalton Earl (SUNY IT) and Means. Wellsville brought in five runs for the inning widening the gap to 8-2.
The Rapids found themselves in scoring position but couldn’t convert, leaving two men on base as the side retired.
The bats went quiet for Wellsville in the third and fourth inning and Genesee creeped closer by scoring one run in the third and four runs in the fourth to narrow the margin to 8-7 heading to the halfway mark.
The Nitros got back to work in the fifth and sixth, scoring one and five respectively resulting in a 14-7 lead.
Wellsville continued on the offensive in the seventh with three runs and their final two runs in ninth to account for their 19 total runs. Genesee rounded out their efforts from the plate scoring two runs in the sixth and in the eighth for their final 11.
For the Rapids, Chapman produced a 4-for-6 night with four RBI. Daniel Lockwood (St. Edward’s), Philip Wells (Baldwin Wallace), Wes Brown (William Carey), and Grant Myers (Monmouth) all finished with two hits apiece.
Wellsville had five with multiple hits. Means and Schrode collected four. Cole Tracy (Finger Lakes CC) added three. Jacob Sims (Roane State CC) and Wasilewski with two hits.
Patrick Berthelette (Marymount) worked 5.1 innings out of the bullpen for the win. The right-hander struck out five and walked one for his first win of the season.
Genesee will finish up their season Sunday at Bradner Stadium against the Olean Oilers at 7:00 PM.
The Nitros have their last regular season game against the Hornell Dodgers on Sunday. First pitch slated for 7:00 PM.
