SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Relief. That is the consensus around the Syracuse Salt Cats team now that they have snapped their longest losing streak of the season. The Salt Cats clobbered the Rome Generals, 12-4 in New York Collegiate Baseball action, Sunday to stop a five-game losing streak.
“It was great day for hitters,” said Salt Cat starter, Tom Burke. “A great day to be a Salt Cat, and just a nice way to end a streak.”
After giving up three earned runs to start the game, Burke threw five scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season. While Burke was on the mound, Syracuse scored 11 unanswered runs over six innings.
Most of those runs came in the later stages, posting three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The innings were almost identical as they both saw two-run triples by Joe Anselmi (Manhattanville College) and RBI singles by Anthony Galanoudis (Molloy College).
Johnny Knight IV (Walsh University) also had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning and went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
“Those two guys [Anselmi and Knight IV] in the lineup are instructed by me to hit it far and deep,” said Syracuse Salt Cat Manager, Mike Martinez. “That’s their job and as far as I’m concerned their doing it.”
With the win, the Salt Cats move to a 13-13 record on the season. Syracuse travels to Sherrill to take on the Silversmiths next. For the Generals, they drop to 11-16 and take on the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs at the Onondaga Community College.
