CORNELL, N.Y. — On a night showered with local fireworks in the background of Maple City Park, a massive rally in the sixth inning lifted the Hornell Dodgers over the Sherrill Silversmiths 15-6. The Dodgers trailed 5-0 heading into the decisive sixth and improved to 14-16 on the year. Sherill is now 8-17.
In the first the Sherrill jumped to the early 1-0 lead. Michael Villa (Lackawanna) led off the game with a single to center and came around to score when Ryan Coulon (St. Thomas Aquinas) delivered a two-out single.
The Silversmiths increased their lead to 5-0 in the fourth with a four-run rally. Dylan Pounds (Pitt-Greensburg), Sebastian De La Cruz (Keystone) and Christian Aybar (Southern New Hampshire) all collected RBI singles while Villa plated a run with an RBI fielder’s choice.
The Dodgers not only got themselves back in the game but took the lead 10-5 with a huge 10-run rally in the sixth. Tage Johnson (Houghton) and Ty Reginelli (Wofford) both knocked collected deep two-run doubles to start the rally. Reginelli, Mike Wick (Webster), and Dylan May (Wofford) then proceeded to score all on wild pitches. John Ricotta (Monroe CC) and Tanner Klein (Mansfield) both smacked RBI singles to keep the inning going. Ricotta capped the scoring when he came home on a throwing error.
In the seventh, the Dodgers tacked on another run to their lead with Reginelli scoring on a May sacrifice fly in left boosting their lead to 11-5.
The Dodgers kept the runs coming in the eighth tacking on another four more runs. Johnson hit his second two-run double to center. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Reginelli, and Wick closed the Dodger scoring when he scored on another Silversmith error.
In the ninth the Silversmiths drew a bases loaded walk but could not get any closer.
For the Dodgers Johnson was perfect on the night going 4-for-4 with a walk, four RBI and two runs scored. Klein and Reginelli both went 2-for-4 on the night with Klein adding one RBI and Reginelli adding three RBI.
On the mound Connor Ryan (Mercyhurst) got the win for the Dodgers tossing eight innings allowing five runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out six.
The Dodgers conclude their 4th of July homestand tomorrow against the Rochester Ridgemen. The first pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
Sherrill travels to Cortland to play the Crush on Sunday. A 3 p.m. first pitch is slated.
