HORNELL, N.Y. — The Hornell Dodgers lost 11-3 to the Wellsville Nitros whose offense was clicking on all cylinders Friday night. The loss takes the Dodgers to 13-16 on the season while the win improves the Nitros record to 11-16
The Wellsville Nitros were the first to get on the board earning their first run of the night in the first. Harry Montero Jr. (Bloomfield) drove in Tyler Culpepper (Roane State CC) on a fielder’s choice for a 1-0 edge.
The Dodgers tied things up 1-1 in the bottom end of the second scoring a run of their own off an RBI triple to the right center gap.
In the fourth the Nitros regained their lead scoring three. Jacob Sims (Roane State CC) blasted a two-run double to right center while Jacob Means (Cowley County CC) hit an RBI single to round out the Nitros scoring in the fourth.
The Nitros offense kept their foot on the throttle scoring a pair of runs in the sixth. Montero hit an RBI triple with Sims smacking an RBI double building the Nitros lead to 6-1.
In the eighth the Nitros piled on three more off RBI singles from Means and Patrick Scholla. Culpepper finished off the scoring with a sacrifice fly making the Nitros lead grow to 9-1.
The Nitros tacked on two more runs in the 9th to cap off their scoring on the night and taking their lead to 11-1.
In the bottom of the ninth the Dodgers gave a last ditch effort to come back but fell short only being able to muster up two runs in the inning. Tanner Klein (Mansfield) had an RBI single with Tage Johnson (Houghton) scored on a wild pitch.
The Dodgers’ Lopatka went 2-for-3 on the night with an RBI.
Means and Sims both went 3-for-5 with three RBI a piece while Montero went 2-for-4 with a walk, three RBI, and four runs scored.
Sam Rice (Ashland) got the win on the mound with eight innings of work allowing three runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out six.
The Dodgers will continue their three game homestand tomorrow at Maple City Park against the Sherrill Silversmiths. First pitch will come at 7 p.m.
