HORNELL, N.Y. — The Hornell Dodgers started off in a hole they couldn’t ever get out of at Maple City Park losing to the Olean Oilers 16-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action, Monday night. The Oilers now have won 20 straight and are 21-1 on the year while the loss brings the Dodgers to 10-10.
The Oilers got things going early with a four-run first. A three run homer deep over the center field fence by David Yanni (Pittsburgh) put the first runs on the board for the Oilers. Alex Griffith (Pittsburgh) added an RBI single to round out the scoring for the inning.
In the second the Oilers kept the runs coming. Capitalizing on a Dodger error, Evan Ryan (St. John Fisher) scored the first run, Aaron Phillips (St. Bonaventure) had an RBI single to center, and Yanni added an RBI groundout to bring the Oilers lead to 7-0.
Not letting their foot off the throttle the Oilers added two runs in the fourth one in the fifth to make it 10-0.
After the Oilers piled on yet another pair of runs to their lead in the seventh the Dodgers finally got on the board in the bottom end of the inning. Adam Naliwajko (Webster) hit an RBI single while Connor Brandon (Concordia-Chicago) scored on a fielder’s choice, and Adam Fitzgibbon (Saginaw Valley) hit an RBI double to top off the scoring and bring the score to 12-3.
The barrage of scoring continued in the eighth for the Oilers widening their lead to 16-3.
Brandon and Jack Trotman (St. John Fisher) went 2-for-4 at the plate on the night for the Dodgers.
Dave Vaccaro (St. Bonaventure) went 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead the way for the Oilers. Yanni was 2-for-4 with four RBI and Ian Luttrell was 2-for-3 with two doubles. The Oilers collected 16 hits and drew 12 walks on the day.
Adam Rigney got the win on the mound tossing seven innings allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out two.
The Dodgers will start a three-game road trip Tuesday night against the Genesee Rapids at Kerr-Pegula Athletics Complex in Houghton. First pitch will be at 7 p.m.
Olean hosts the Rochester Ridgemen for a 7 p.m. first pitch at Bradner Stadium.
